Message:   I served with HHC, 14th Combat Aviation Battalion in Chu Lai from Feb. 1967 to Feb. 1968. LTC "Wild Bill" Ponder [now deceased] was the CO and then LTC Carroll just before I left. I wonder what ever happened to LT Campbell and SP4 Curtis P. B. Pullen. Also Lester Hirst, who accompanied me on my first R&R to Sydney where we met people who are my friends to this day.

Message:   Looking for anyone who knows the current location of Henry "Butch" Wilkens who served in the 178th in 1965-66 as a crew chief. I knew Butch in an Army Reserve pathfinder platoon at Fort Meade, MD, from 1978-1980, where he added master jump wings, air assault wings and a pathfinder torch to his aviator wings. Butch worked for the phone company in the DC suburban area of Maryland but I haven't seen in over a decade and I'd like to get in touch with him to let him know that our old pathfinder platoon sergeant, SFC "Iron Mike" Parris, veteran of the 44th Infantry Platoon (Scout Dog), 25th Inf Div in Vietnam and later a special forces NCO, passed away in his sleep last July.

I well recall the many instances of wandering down to the big grassy area just outside the wire which served as our LZ and having the most welcome Boxcar hooks come in with everything and anything we needed to subsist. I salute those brave skillful crews of the hook birds and offer to buy any and all Boxcar a beer anytime er' anywhere...A little late but heart felt, thank you.

Message:   I flew Gunner then as SP5 Crew chief on Box159 from Jan-1966 thru Jan-1967. Stationed in Phu loi. I was in Operations Iron Triangle, Juction City, etc.. On one incident we were flying in neutral country which was Cambodia, There they knock us out of the air with quad 50s and we autorotated into some Elephant grass and water. They hit our transmission hydraulic lines and there for a minute I thaught we were going to catch fire, the back ramp looked like a steam room. Well the Vietcon try to zero in us with some motor rounds. We grapped one machine gun and some boxes of amo and a case of C-rations and ran through knee deep water for about 150 yards away from the aircraft because the Vietcon wanted to blow up the Chinnook. Two phanton jet were strafing the area along with 6 huey gun ships. They pick us up in about 30 minutes.
Our mission that day was combat assualt, Three Chinnooks from the 178 Assualt company 6 Huey Gun Ships and 2 Phantom jets, we dropped a total of 90 TNT barrels of CS Gas. Our job was to stirred up the Vietcon to see if they were there, sure enough we recieved imediate ground fire.
I also have some picture I can share if you can tell me where to send.
I like your website how its growing with data and pictures, keep up the good work.

"Blackwater Aviation is looking for helicopter pilots and mechanics to work overseas to continue to support our current MD 530F program and for a new additional aviation package of one MD 530F and two Bell 407s, also flying in support of our Blackwater Security Personnel. The pilots need to have at least 4000 hours flight time, 500 NVG hours and have operated in either a combat or high risk environment. The mechanics need to hold an A&P certificate, with MD 530F or Bell 407 experience and have operated in either a combat or high risk environment. Yes, you will have to be an American, and yes, it does require a background check for a security clearance. During our employees time in country, our pilots are paid $600 a day and mechanics are paid $450 a day. They all do a rotation of 60 days in and 30 days out with a round trip ticket to their home of record. If you can't handle things that go boom or bang in the middle of the night, do not waste your or our time responding. Sent resume to RichardP@BlackwaterAviation.com or fax to (321) 253-8814.

Message:   I was on the crew of the second C-130 (Spare 807) that went into Kham Duc on May 12,1968 to evacuate the air base. I can to this day recall so vividly most of what happened that day, and so glad I'm alive to do so. Everyone that made it out that day I am sure is very thankful to all that helped make it possible. As a crew member involved in the evacuation looking back I find it amazing that any of us actually made it with the number of NVA that had surrounded the base that day. With out the fighter support and ground support that there was we may not have made it either. I want to thank all who helped make it possible for me to write this today, 35 years later.

Message:   Was with the 178th during June 1966 through Jan 1968. Phu Loi first then on to Chu Lai with the Boxcars. I Have been able to catch up with a few guys I was with. I met with Gilmore and had lunch in Columbia. Got an email from Bob Blum and spoke with Louis Schmid in New York last month. Wanted to attend the reunion this year but will not be able to. I'm involved in two businesses and lost a partner last month due to illness. I spoke with Danny Shoffner's wife a couple months back, for you who remember Danny, he passed away a couple years ago. Danny was a very successful business man. He and I were from NC and use to go to the drag races at the same time. I retireed from the Army in 1985 as CW2. I look over the web site alot, but have not uses the guest book until now. I have some very fond and sad memories of my tour with the Boxcars. I spent another tour in Nam with MACV as an advisor to the Chinese Nungs in Pleiku and the Delta with the ARVNs. Well if any of you remember me and want to email please to do so and I'll try to contribute as well. May all of you experience success and happiness, because you and I, have helped make this country the best place in the world--even with our problems. Later, Crane

Message:   Well, another Memorial Day has rolled around. It's been a long time since '68 and a place called Chu Lai. Time to remember (like we could ever forget) those who did not make it back or have left us since coming back. This year we have troops who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and en route to both. I have a son at Mosul, Iraq, and pray for his safe return. This site is special place for me. Thanks for letting me visit.

Message:   I was an EM with 71st AHC from 1968 to 1969. I remember the cs grenades that I assumed someone from boxcars (your side of our hanger) would set off behind the Rattler / Firebird maintenance hanger from time to time. Always when the wind was blowing towards our hanger. The first time I ran around like most everyone else. By the third time I knew enough to just head upwind. It made my day when I saw our Officers "stamping" on the grenade with tears in their eyes. Thanks for the memories!!!

Message:   Just got back from Vietnam. Hanoi, Danang, Hue, Marble Mountain, trip to Hoi On, Hiep Duc, and a nice trip down highway one trough Tam Ky and to Chu Lai. Had a nice visit on the beach, sat and enjoyed an orange Fanta with some questionable ice. The Americal compound is locked up and the airbase at Chu Lai is in great shape but not used. I read that there are plans to restore it for civil use to bring business and economic growth to the area. The vil is as it was with a larger population. Much fishing. Traveled to Saigon and had a nice visit there for a few days. I was very impressed with the electrical service to all area visited. Sewer is going in along the road throughout Vietnam. People are happy and geting along great. Super friendly and quite eager to work and start businesses. Visited a few schools that Rotary Int. is supporting through East Meets West, Vietnam Children's Fund, Dove Foundation. Met with Terry Anderson in Hanoi to discus possible projects to help kids. Pictures will be published soon...

I was Hercules 16 and later changed to Herc 18. Always thought a lot of the Boxcars and really am impressed with your website. Just wish I had found it sooner. I would have made the reunion in Savannah. I think some of the 132nd personnel joined the 178th after we stood down. Good luck and best wishes to everyone.

Now to my question. Our Unit Crest in the 178th was a burst of 3 lightning-bolts with the word "VERSATILITY" above it. Ive lost my pair over the years and would like to have one again. Does anyone know where I can get one??? The unit at Ft. Sill is long gone and the present Commander of the 3rd Artillery Division has never heard of it. Any help is great help!
Thanks guys! yours truly,

Message:   Just would like to give an over due thanks of for all the supplies brought in for C 3/82 artillery and the many moves. Especially for Nov of 68 on LZ Karen when we needed 105 ammo so bad in support of 4/31 in the battle of Nui Chom. I was just about out and boxcar coming in with a sortie. He asked for cease fire and I said hell no. Come in from the rear and drop it in the middle of my three 105's and back out if you don't want to get shot out of the air. And he did exactly. You will never know how much it was appeciated.
Thanks ever so much and God Bless.

Message:   Spent year in Chu Lai with 178th ASHC. 1968-1969.Spent a few weeks burning you know what and then, after a day at Capt John Baroveto Range qualifying the m-16, I got to go off company area to flight line. Worked for CWO Sullivan at Operations. Was the guy that traded a refrigerator to C-Bees for plywood and built in desks and bed in Houch area. Got into alot of trouble for that. Ended up crewing and filling in a DG. Remember all you guys but few names at this point. I have some pictures and good memories of some great times. Going back to Vietnam in April. Will go out to Chu Lai and see what there is. I'll post photos when I return. Remember Tom Verkozen who worked in C.O. Office. Met up with him and his wife a couple of years after getting home. Have lost complete contact.

It is funny how something's will stay forever in your mind and some of
your friends you can't remember their names. Yes I was there when the
chinook got shot down. My gun pit was gun one and it was on the very end
of Professional. The lower chopper pad was just down from us. There were
two chinooks that came in that morning. We were low on supplies, one had
ammo and the other had a water trailer. The one with the ammo had to go
to the lower pad. It was common at this time on Professional that when
anything flew in things were going to happen. The NVA would drop
mortars, 51 cal machine gun fire and AK 47 fire. The chinook with the
water trailer started taking on fire and had to drop the water trailer
that was full of water. If he hadn't done this he would have gone down
as well. On my web site I have two pictures of what is left of the
chinook on the lower chopper pad. As far as what you heard through the
grapevine about the artillery men saving the day I have never heard or
read anything to that effect. I will and can say this, Every man on that
hill was trying to do his part that morning to fight back at the NVA and
protect the two birds. I remember the crew getting out of the chinook
and making it to a bunker that morning. The only thing left when it was
over was the blades and two engines and the ash. If I am not mistaken we
didn't have anymore birds try to come in that day. The crew got out the
next day. I hope that I have answered some of your questions. I try to
say it like it was and not put anything in it that isn't true. I have
read some stuff that I know is pure bull and I won't go there. The most
scared that I have been in my life was on that LZ, I can only imagine
what it was like for you and the other crews that had to fly into a HOT
LZ. I take my hat off to you guys!!!

Message:   I was with the 179th ASH in 67-68 I was a technical Inspector at that time. We traded some of our high time hooks for some with less hours in the 178th. I was the guy that instigated drilling 3/4" dia holes in the bottom of our aircraft. Whew, did that make the guys in the sheet metal shop down at the 178th mad when they had to plug them back up.
I was service platoon sergeant / maintenance chief / flight platoon sergeant in the 213th Avn at Phu Loi 69-71 so got to spend three years in Vietnam with the Hooks. Strange for a 67Z/67W to spend that much time on one type aircraft. I retired in 1974. Nice to see that the boxcars have a web site. 52d CAB has a reunion but the 179th does not. The 213th does but I have never attended. Best of luck to all the old hook people. I will answer any email that comes my way. Rodger

Message:   I joined the boxcars out of the 132nd when we arrived in country. I was an assistant plt. leader and roomed with Maj. Bobby Briggs who was the exo.If memory serves. I wrote the eulogy for lt.Eoff, also IDed sp/6 Phillips at the morgue. Of the many memories of that time,my favorite is picking up a sling load for the engineers and while in route to the dropoff site the loadmaster told us that we had 14000lbs of dymamite hanging down there. My copilot and I just looked at each other, each of us thinking, whats wrong with this picture.I moved on to become the Airfield commander at Quang Ngai for the rest of my tour.My best to all of the Boxcars.
